Needless to say if you look out at how the world measures a book successful, or an author for that matter, I could never be considered in that category. I can not seem to obtain a literary agent, or an audience for the books that I have put out there. Without these I do not really exist to the world of Authors, Writers, Agents or Publishers.
The other day I was reminded of the misconceptions of being a writer. Everyone sees themselves as a writer, therefore they don't see it as an actual career. Then I ran into the second type of misconception. It is easy to get a book in front of a publisher. No, in fact it is almost impossible without an agent. And before you start thinking it can't be that hard to get an agent, It is. It is hard to get someone to take a chance on a new story. What sells is what most companies go after. Which perhaps is why it never seems like there is anything new.
This is why I have been self publishing. Remnants Publishing is my own publishing company. I put up my own money, to put out Polarbe's Hibernation as a hardcover book. Needless to say sales have been alright for a first book. Unfortunately it has not gotten me where I need to be to put out the next book. So Unmasked is only going to be available on Kindle for $0.99.
So why am I sharing all of this with you, here on my blog? No, it is not just to have an outlet for my little soapbox. Though that is a nice part of being practically anonymous. I can say what I want to as an author without feeling particularly scrutinized.
But back to my point. Success to me is not measured by compensation. (though that would be really nice.) It is measured on my accomplishments as a writer. I have been writing for close to four years, as my full time job. With close to three hundred unfinished stories at different levels of completion. Many of which just need a little polish and finishing touches to be complete. So last year I decided to take a chance. And I finished a Children's book. I also took a small paragraph of an idea, a dream and created it into a novella that I started for NaNoWriMo.
The fact that I have completed, finished these stories and put them out there is a form of success all in its own. I would like to say it is encouraging. I would like to say that I don't worry about the fact that no one really seems to be reading my stories outside of people I know. But for now I have to accept and bask in the tiny glow of what I have accomplished and keep moving forward. I dream of being a success in the worlds standards, and I really thought that it might happen with Unmasked. No matter what success comes my way, be it compensation or just self accomplishment; I get to put my stories out there, and tell them the way I want to; as a Writer and an Author, I can't really ask for anything else.
So, I hope all of you who do visit my site, read my blog and my books I hope that you enjoy the newest book I have released. Other then that I just want all of you to know that I #amwriting
